Rump Session

This program is tentative

A successful rump session crucially depends on you, the attendees of Crypto 2021, to send in your best submissions so we can create a cracking program. Do you have breaking news, progress reports, or other topics of interest to the cryptographic community? Can you keep your talk short and entertaining? The rump session is where people show off their talents, present breaking news with their own sense of humour, or in rare cases either commiserate their rejected submission, or plug work under submission in deadpan fashion, hoping in vain of influencing potential reviewers in the audience.

Call for Contributions

You can submit your proposals by submitting the form linked below before the end of the social break on the second day of the conference. Any submissions mucking up the form or otherwise not following these guidelines may be summarily rejected. Some submissions may have to be rejected or shortened because of time constraints (and we have less time allocated than usual).

Please remember that the rump session is meant for short and entertaining presentations. To encourage you all to send in and give humorous talks, there will be a Best Presentation Award at the rump session. Aside from eternal glory, the prize is secret.

We will only be accepting a very limited number of talks (if any) related to any conference/meeting announcements or job adverts since these types of announcements are now well served by the IACR's online Calendar of Events and Open Positions in Cryptology web pages, or chat on Zulip. However, if you want to submit one slide only for such events then we may display these during an opportune moment.

The detailed program for the rump session will appear here when it's ready, though be advised that all times will be tentative.

Platform

The rump session will be run via Zoom and will be live simulcast on YouTube and both video and slides will be made available online to the wider world afterwards. The act of submitting will be taken as your consent to these terms. Note that it is your responsibility as a rump session contender that no plagiarism or copyright infringements take place. Do not play copyrighted music as part of your talk under any circumstances. If you aren't sure, it's probably copyrighted.

Speakers will be asked to share their own screen at the time of the talk. To reduce the talk-switching time, we encourage all the speakers to locally practice screen sharing on Zoom. Screen switching time will count as part of a speakers allocated time and, in case of technical difficulties, we will unfortunately have to cut short after about 15 seconds with an ultimate attempt at the end of the rump session, time permitting.

Format

For the submission we need a PDF, but the rump session will be virtual through Zoom. The current presenter will be in focus and can share their screen. This means that you can use your own machine to run your part of the rump session, so if you don't want to use PDF, simply submit a placeholder PDF-conversion instead. It also means you can update slides until quite late. Some people might like to tinker with their presentation until the last minute, so this year is your opportunity!

Even if you plan a live presentation or something else that doesn't involve slides, we require you to submit at least a title slide. The reason is that we will let every speaker share their screen at the beginning of their talk, thereby bringing the focus to them before the start of their talk.

Detailed Instructions

The organizers will start the Zoom session 10-15 minutes before the rump session starts (Wednesday August 18 at 21:30 UTC).

  1. You are strongly encouraged to use the desktop client to connect to the session; the web client can have sound and screen sharing issues.
  2. We will announce the running order well in advance and we expect you to be in the Zoom session at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start of their contribution.
  3. We aim to send a private message via Zoom to signal you to be ready shortly before the start time of their talk. We recall everyone should use their professional name when logging into Zoom, which is essential for us to be able to contact you easily through Zoom's chat. If you are not signed in to Zoom under your full professional name, you run the risk of forfeiting your slot.
  4. You should be prepared to be share their screen and start talking after being introduced by us live on the stream. Your time starts as soon as we finish introducing you, and if there is too much technical dilly-dallying, we will unfortunately have to cut you short.
  5. For talks that are skipped or cut short due to speakers not being ready at their original slot, we will endeavour to reschedule on the fly, but there are no guarantees here.
A final reminder: do not play copyrighted music as part of your talks. Yes, we're serious. Yes, we know it's a bummer. Since the rump session is recorded and posted on YouTube, if you play copyrighted music, the IACR YouTube account is at risk of being shut down. Please don't put us at risk!
